Ledro valley
Enjoy Lake Ledro and the famous pile dwelling settlement
The principal feature of the Valley is undoubtedly Lake Ledro, which is also the number one tourist spot. The lake, which is approx. 3 km long and slightly less than 1 km wide, was formed as a result of a morainal barrier and is used, today, as a water reservoir for the hydroelectric power plant of Riva del Garda. Important remains of a Prehistoric settlement have been found on its shores. Not to be missed there is the Pile Dwelling Museum, on the site of this ancient settlement, which was erected on the eastern shore of Lake Ledro, at the beginning of the 2nd Millennium BCE, and where the ancestors of today's inhabitants lived for about 7 centuries. It is one of the most important lakeside pile dwelling settlements known in Europe today. Over 10,000 piles have been found belonging to the village, which was about 5 km wide. The Museum was built in 1972, next to the remaining piles and to a reconstructed dwelling, connected to the shore by a footbridge, and displays a part of the artifacts found there.
